I am a Jamaican woman with natural, thick hair. In the past, I avoided headbands because I found the available ones difficult to put on. As I pulled them over my head oftentimes, they would ruin my hairstyle and makeup. I also found that they were either too tight or too loose. I wanted something I could put on with ease and that was adjustable, so I started wearing my bra straps that came with a strapless bra, haha. My friends would ask where I got my headband. I felt silly telling them it was not an actual headband, but it was my bra strap I was wearing on my head because of how easy it was for me and my big hair.
After a few years of wearing my bra strap as a headband and having multiple people ask me where I got it, I thought, “hmm, I should start making headbands, with the adjustability like a bra strap, I am sure a lot of other people had the same struggles.”
I started with the basic black band. I was thrilled with all the great feedback and requests I was getting to make them when people realized I was designing and creating the headbands myself. As more and more people requested that I make headbands for their children, sisters and themselves, I found that people wanted some with sparkle, some for when they worked out, and some with the colors of their favorite teams, so I designed the bling collection, team collection and more are on the way. I’ve always loved the bright and vibrant colors maybe because all Jamaicans do, haha! I also wanted to embrace my heritage, so I started the African print collection using well-known, traditional cotton material.
I decided to name my company after my late mother Joyette Bowen. I think she would be my number one fan and cheerleader, encouraging me to continue to create a unique, practical and fun accessories for people who want a better way to wear their hair.
